Objective: To investigate the therapeutic action of "JiLuoTong" decoction to lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. Method: Through the degree of pain along the spinal column and lower limbs, the quantification of clinical signs and level of MDA in cerebral-spinal fluid by means of fluorimetry, which were the criteria of effect. By contrast with the effect of "JiLuoTong" and "Escin". Results: JiLuoTong" had superior effect to pain, alleviated the symptoms and signs of patients, as well as the quality of work and lives contrasted with "Escin". Its fine rate was approximately 75.00 percent. In addition, CSF was obtained every time to determine the level of MDA. The normal people was recruited as normal contral. Before therapy, the level of MDA in former two-groups was 54. 95 + 12. 64Pmol/L and 55. 96 + 12. 32Pmol/L respectively and was 35. 95 + 9. 12Pmol/L in contral group. The former was significantly higer than the latter. After therapy, the level of MDA in in former two groups was 43. 44 + 10. 51Pmol/L and 47. 81 + 11. 02Pmol/L respectively, which was significantly lower than that in pre-therapy cases. Our results suggested that free radicals were involved in the pathogenic procedure of the injury of nerve roots resulted from intervertebral disc protrusion. Conclusion: JiluoTong" decoction had superior effect. It diminished the in flammatory media and accelerated the foundation of microvasculature. above all, It inhibited significantly the MDA resulted from the injury of nerve roots which could destroy lipid and produce lipid peroxides.
