Objective: To explore the effects of Wendan decoction plus radiotherapy or chemotherapy on brain metastasis, and study the relevant mechanism by animal experiment. Methods: 100 patients with brain metastasis diagnosed by CT or tissue biopsy were treated with Wendan decoction in combination with chemotherapy or radiotherapy . The changes of subjective and objective signs were clinically observed. And through experimental study, the mechanism about how the decoction influenced chemoreceptor trigger zone and central vomiting system are also explored. Results: Among 100 cases, the cases of complete remission and partial remission are 61 and 25 respectively. Subjective symptoms improved significantly after three weeks treatment. The animal experiment indicated that Wendan decoction could alleviate the symptoms of vomiting and sedate mice due to inhibiting the chemoreceptors and the centrum. Conclusion: Wendantang plus and minus have the exact effects in treating intracranial metastatic tumours. Because of its relieving the side effects of chemotherapy or radiotherapy, enhancing the quality of life, Wendantang is regarded as a good decoction in TCM for treating brain metastasis.
