Since having undertaken the task, which indicated that the 4th method of water mensuration in Chinese pharmacopoeia of 2000 year's edition should be modified in 2005 year's, we have done much on this. In this experiments both toluene method and GC method were used to determine the content of water in many pills, and many kinds of factors that may have effects on the content of water that will be determined in pills were investigated. In GC method, pills were dealt with ethanol absolute, 1μL the solution was injected on a 401 organic support column (3m × 3mm, 80-100 mush). The thermal conductivity detector (TCD ) was used and detector temperature was 200℃ The injector port and detector temperature were 145℃ and 200℃ respectively. Carrier gas was nitrogen with a flow rate of 30mL.min-1 It obviously showed that there was a good similarity between toluene method and GC method. GC method was shown to be sensitive, fast, simple and hardly had any pollution to our environment. Once a large number of samples were analyzed with this method, each will cost little. So it is very necessary to use GC method instead of toluene method for determining the content of water in honeyed pills. In this research, we not only suggested that many aspects of the 4th method of water mensuration, which were recorded in national pharmacopoeia of 2000 year should be revised, but also set up a reference for the People's Republic of China Pharmacopoeia of 2005.
