OBJECTIVE To assess the relationship between free fatty acids (FFA) and atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM).METHODS To measure the plasma levels of FFA and hsCRP by colorimetric method and immulite assay in 54 type 2 diabetes patients with or without atherosclerosis and 30 normal controls at baselineRESULTS (1) Compared with the controls, baseline levels of FFA (P<0.05) and hsCRP(P<0.01) were significantly increased among DM cases; The plasma levels of FFA and hsCRP were significantly higher in DM patients with atherosclerosis than without that(P<0.01,P<0.01); (2)Plasma FFA,hsCRP were positive correlation with BMI,HbA1c,HOMA-IR,TG, LDL-c,BP, they were negative correlation with HDL-c; There was a postive correlation between plasma FFA and hsCRP.CONCLUSION (1)The plasma levels of FFA and hsCRP may be the sensitive markers for early diagnosis of atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes and predicting the prognosis. (2) Plasma FFA and hsCRP may be relate to type 2 DM and insulin resistance.
