From the viewpoint of literature research and the theoretic explore, the author made a systematic study on the etiology and pathology of sports fatigue and the therapeutic principles and methods for this kind of fatigue. In the literature of traditional Chinese medicine, the discussions about physical fatigue sporadically appear in the discussion of disorders of "overexertion", "consumptive disease", "asthenia disease of viscera", etc.. The causative factors of sports fatigue are overwork and mental overstrain and sports fatigue is also associated with dietary inadequacy, emotional stress, lack of exercise and so on.The basic pathology of sports fatigue is "deficiency due to exhaustion of essence-Qi". The deficiency of the spleen and kidney is the main pathology of sports fatigue. The liver has a close relation with sports capacity and fatigue endurance because the liver has the functions of storing and regulating the blood, dominating unconstraint and free-going movement of Qi, and possessing a close relation with the tendons. The weakness of the heart and lung occurring in sports fatigue is mostly manifested by the pathology ofcoexisting with the weakness of the spleen and liver. In addition to the general measures for relieving the symptoms of fatigue, this paper laid a strong emphasis on the discussion about the antagonistic therapies of fatigue aiming at the pathology of the viscera (Zang-Fu organs) and Qi-blood. The main therapeutic principle of compound formulae of Chinese herbal medicine for antagonizing sports fatigue is mostly to reinforce the spleen and kidney. Since the new theory of "disorders of Qi movement of the liver and spleen resulting in sports fatigue" was put forward, the idea of "regulating Qi and strengthening the vital energy" has been often used as the main therapeutic principle for sports fatigue, which means that regulation of Qi promotes tonification and tonification contains regulation of Qi. . The concepts of the disease and syndromes of sports fatigue have been developed in recent years, and the methods for the treatment of sports fatigue based on the differentiation of its syndromes according to the disease or the syndromes especially manifest the specialties and advantages of traditional Chinese medicine and herbal drugs in antagonizing sports fatigue. Meanwhile, this paper also discussed the differences of pathogenesis of fatigue in different kinds of sports training and at different stages of the sports, based on which the paper made an approach to different principles and methods of antifatigue.
