Carcinoma of esophagus is a kind of tumor with the high death rate. It highly occurs in such areas as Henan province. Angiogenesis is regarded nessessary for growth and metastasis in all solid tumors, moreover, it may be correlated with ascite formation of solid tumors. Angiogenesis is regulated by certain stimulators and inhibitors. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), is the most typical angiogenesis stimulator, overexpressing in many tumors. Recent studys showed that VEGF can obviously inhibit the differential maturity of DCs, and reduce the number of them, which lead to the immunologic deficiency of the tumor hosts. In this study, 56 cases of carcinoma of esophagus were studied with immunohistochemical LFAB method. The distrbution and the expression of DCs, VEGF and its receptor FLT-1 in the carcinoma of esophagus and their relationship with the clinical pathologic data were analysed and so were the effects of VEGF on DCs. The purpose was to make out the effects of VEGF in carcinoma in the vascular formation of the tumor and thereduction of the anti immunity of the tumor of the organism, so as to offer theoretical evidence for the new treatment approach of carcinoma of esophagus-the treatment of anti vascular formation and anti tumor immunity.Results:1. The number of DCs gradually decreased from the section to mucosa but there was no statistically significant difference.2. There were two forms of DCs in the tissues of carcinoma; one was branching and the other was round or oval due to the reduced branches.3. CDla+ DCs had no obvious relation with age, sex, the degree of differentiation, the size of tumor, the lymphatic metastasis and the depth of infiltration.4. The highly stained cells were mostly located in the center of thecancer hosts. The positive expression rate of VEGF was 55.4%; that of FLT-1 was 71.4%. There was no statistically significant difference.5. The positive expression rate of VEGF and flt-1 in cancer tissueswas higher than that in the normal mucosal (the mucosa of the section and the junction).6. the positive expression rate of VEGF and FLT-1 had nothing todo with age. sex. the size of tumor and the degree of differentiation, but to do with the lymphatic metastasis and thedepth of infiltration of the tissues of squmous carcinoma of esophagus.7. The rank-correlation analysis indicated that in all the cases withthe expression of VEGF, there was an obvious decrease in the number of DCs in the tissues of carcinoma. VEGF and CD1a+ DCs had an obvious negative relation.8. The rank-correlation analysis indicated that in all the cases with the expression of flt-1, there was an obvious decrease in the number of DCs in the tissues of carcinoma. Flt-1 and CD1a+ DCs had an obvious negative relation.Conclusions:1. Two types of DCs with different functions may exist in the tissues of squmous carcinoma of esophagus.2. VEGF is of biological benifits when combined with its receptor.3. Upon inadequate supply, the tumor cells would secret VEGF tohelp in the formation of microblood vessels and the improvement of supply.4. VEGF and its receptor take part in the hyperplasia, the infiltration and the metastasis of the tumor cells of squmous carcinoma of esophagus.5. After the specific combination with its receptor, VEGF cam obviously inhibit the differential maturity of DCs and reduce the number of them.
