Objective: To study the histology and histocompatibility on non-nerve graftmaterial of the human-hair keratin, and to observe the characteristics of histomorphology and histocompatibility, and to provide the ideal non-nerve material for nerve grafting.Method: (1) Implant experiment on Wistar rats: eighteen Wistar rats were:implanted with human-hair keratin non-nerve graft material and normal human-hair respectively, the local histological reaction was observed in different time (2th, 8th, 12th week). (2) Transplant experiment on rats nerve: eighteen Wistar rats were divided into A, B and C three groups (average six rats). Group A was the experiment group, group B and C were control groups. The sciatic nerves of rats were removed! 10mm and transplanted by using human-hair keratin graft material, skeletal muscle and normal-hair respectively. The characteristics of histomorphology and anatomy were examined in different time (8th, 12th, 24th week) after surgery. Results: (1)Implant experiments showed that the local inflammatory reactionwas induced by human-hair keratin non-nerve graft material and normal hair in rats body. But the local stimulated reaction induced by human-hair keratin was lower than normal hair (p<0.05). (2)The limbs ulcer were occurred in one rat of the experiment group and 3 rats of the control groups after 2 weeks, but were healed 6 weeks later . (3)The white tissue could be seen embedded in the nerve substitute and human-hair keratin degraded on 8th,12th,24th week. Large amount of infantile myelinated nerve fibers were observed under optical microscope to regenerate around human-hair which was partially degraded and absorbed. (4)There was no evident myelinated nerve fiber, but white similar tumour tissue in group B. Little white tissue could be seen in nervesubstitute and no hair degraded in group C.Conclusion: The non-nerve graft material of the human-hair keratin has nosignificant antigenity to the body of rats, which could guide nerve regeneration across a 10-mm gap. It was an ideal material for making experiment animal models and for nerve injury repair.
