Objective To observe the effects of tetrahydrobiopterin(BH4) on lipid peroxidation in Hypercholesterol rabbits through detecting the activity of superoxide Dismuctase (SOD) and the amounts of Malondial dehyde (MDA).Method I Twenty-fours rabbits were divided randomly into four groups and given different diets .A grouprnormal diet; B group:BH4 plus hypercholesterol diet; C group:Vitamin E (vitE) plus hypercholesterol diet; D group :only hypercholesterol diet. Afrer thirty days, Serum was obtained ,Total cholesreol SOD and MDA were determined. Results:The amount of total cholesterol in A group ( 4.06 0.55mmol/l) was significantly lower than the ones in other groups(28.70 6.55, 17.95 6.18, 25.13 6.67 mmol/l, respectively,p<0.01). Total cholesterol in C group was obviously lower than the ones in B and D group C p<0.01).The activity of SOD in B group was higher than that in D group (289.50 12.95NU/ml VS 264.35 18.81 NU/ml, p<0.05) .The amount of MDA in B group was obviously lower than that in D group (27.97 6.97nmol/l VS 55.26 12.00 nmol/l,p<0.01.)Conclusion: Hypercholesterolemia can decline the level of BR?and thus reverse the function of NOS. As a result, lots of oxygen free radicals are produced, and cause lipid peroxidation. Supplement of tetrahydrobiopterin(BH4) can restore the activity of NOS, reduce all kinds of oxygen free radicals and decline the level of lipid peroxidation.
