Objective:To object the effects of American Ginseng on rabbits Radius fracture healing using indexes as X-ray, the gray values, general morphography and ultrastructure of the callus, Which might explicate the promoting effect and mechanism of American Giseng to fracture healing.Methods:40 mature New Zealand rabbits were randomly assingned into control group and experimental group. The 3mm-long bone defects were made in the right radius of each rabbit. Gentamicin(GM) were injected for three days after operation. Both groups were fed standard food and purified water. Experimental group were fed American ginseng(0.5g/kg) every day. Control group were fed same volume of normal saline. When It was postop of 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks, both groups were espectively measured by X-ray, the gray values of the callus, general morphous observation osteoblast counting, the ratio of area of bone trabecula to area of cavitas medullaris and transmission electron microscope(TEM) observation. Results: (l)The experimental group X-ray results showed the average gray values of the callus was insignificantly higher than control group(P>0. 05) after 2 weeks while it was significantly higher than control group(P<0. 05)after 4, 6, 8 weeks. (2) The number of Osteoblast counted in the experimental group was significantly more than control group after 2, 4 weeks(P<0. 05) and it was even significantly after 6 weeks(P<0.01). (3) The ratio of area of bone trabecula to area of cavitas medullaris of the experimental group was significantly higher than control group after 2, 4 weeks (P<0.05) and it was even significantly after 6 weeks (P<0.01). (4) The transmission electron microscope(TEM) observation result showed the number of fibroblast in experimental group was more than control group and osteocollagenous fibers was aligned tightly and regularly in experimental group which was contrasted with control group after 2 weeks. Conclusion: American Ginseng can promote fracture healing by increasing the number of Osteoblast, biomechanics of callus and promoting composition of osteocollagenous fibers.
