Salvia deserta Schang (Labiate) is a perennial plant. The whole plant is used as medicine. This plant have been mainly clearing away heat and toxic material, expelling phlegm and arresting cough, subduing swelling and inducing diuresis. Its' stem can get to 60 centimeter and its' flowers are purple. This plant widely distribut in north of Xinjiang and grow inbaldlands, woods or grassplot, altitude 270-1850 metre.Salvia deserta schang is the traditional herb in Xinjiang province in china. It has abundant resource. It was reported that four kinds of water soluble components had been found from the roots of Salvia deserta Schang by Chinese and Japanese scholor Rena kasimu, Yasohiro, Tezuka. The test shows that one of the water soluble components salvianolic acid K can strongly inhibit the activity of aldose reductese. In 1999, Chang jun-ming isolated eight fatty soluble compounds from Salvia deserta Schang. One of the fatty soluble components 6,7-dehydroroyleanone was proved that it can protect the heart when it is in short of the blood. We studied the chemical constituents of stem from Salvia deserta schang for the first time and isolated one compounds from water extract fraction and seven fatty soluble compounds from MeOH extract fraction. At present, because the quantity of several compounds is few, we have finished the structures of seven compounds from these eight kinds of compounds by chemical reactions and spectroscopic means such as UV, IR,1 H-NMR,13 C-NMR, 2D-NMR, MS and identified them as β-sitosterol( I ); oleanolic acid(II);Ursolic acid (III);6,7-Dedydroroyleanone (IV); 7-0- acetylhor-minone( V ); β-daucosterol( VI); Salvianolic acid K(VII).Except theβ-sitosteroll, oleanolic acid and Salvianolic acid K, other compounds were isolated from the aerial parts of Salvia deserta Schang for the first time. In addition, we also studied the effects of twelve kinds of water soluble extracts on eliminating hydroxyl radicals in Fenton reaction for the first time by spin trapping-electron spin resonance(ESR) method. The results showed that the water extracts of flowers had even better effects of scavenging · OH comparing with other sample in the tested concentration, and the effects had no relation with the concentration. But the effects of scavenging · OH of other sample had dependent relation with the concentration, and showed the double actions of eliminating and strengthening in different concentration. So this test established firm foundament for further developing and utilizing Salvia deserta Schang which probed not only the study of the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of the individual spacies of Salvia, but also the study of preventive antioxidant beneficial for the first time.
