Salvia deserta Schang, one species of Salvia L, which belongs to Family Labiatae, is a perennial herbage plant. The whole plant is used as medicine. This plant have been mainly clearing away the heat-evil and expelling superficial evils, relieving a cough and dispelling phlegm, subduing swelling and induing diuresis. Its stem can get to 70 centimeter and its feathery double leaves grow oppositely. This plant widely distributed in north of Xinjiang and Russia and grows in badlands, woods or grassplot, altitude 270-1850 metre.Salvia deserta Schang, the traditional herb in Xinjiang province in China has abundant resource. The former scholars have studied the chemical constituents of the stem and flowers of Salvia deserta Schang and have obtained two active components. One is a fatty compound: 6,7-dehydro-royleanone, which was proved that it can protect the heart when it is in short of the blood. Another one is water soluble compound: Salvianolic acid K, which can strongly inhibit the activity of aldose reductase. So on the basis of the former research, we have studied the chemical constituents of the leaf of this plant for the first time. We have isolated one compound from water extract fraction and six fatty soluble compounds from MeOH extract fraction. At present, we have finished appraising the structures of seven compounds by chemical reaction and spectroscopic means such as UV, IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, 2D-NMR, MS and identified them as β -sitosterol; oleanolic acid; Ursolic; 5-hydroxy-4',6,7-trimethoxy flavone, Salvianolic acid M, 3-carboxy-neo-cleoda-3,13-dien-15,16-olide, pentatetracontane acid-p-hydroxyl-benzethyl ester. Except β -sitosterol, oleanolic acid, Ursolic, 5-hydroxy-4',6,7-trimethoxy flavone, the other compounds were isolated from Salvia deserta Schang for the first time. So this test not only supplied and perfected the research data of the chemical constituents from the aerial parts of the Salvia deserta Schang, but also established firm foundation for further developing and utilizing Salvia deserta Schang and proper plant resources in Xinjiang.
