Salvia deserta Schang, one species of Salvia L, which belongs to Family Labiatae, is a perennial herbage plant. The whole plant is used as medicine. Its dried root are called xinjiang-danshen. This plant have been mainly clearing away the heat-evil and expelling superficial evils, relieving a cough and dispelling phlegm, subduing swelling and induing diuresis. Its stem can get to 60 centimeter and its feathery double leaves grow oppositely. This plant widely distributed in north of Xinjiang and Russia and grows in badlands, woods or grassplot, altitude 270-1850 metre. There are more than one thousand species of Salvia L.in the world. The chemical consistuends of more than two handred species were studied by the former scholars. In the main, these chemical consistuends were composed of Phenolic acid and Terpenoids. Salvia deserta schang is the traditional herb in Xinjiang province in china. It has abundant resource. It was reported that many new active components had been found from Salvia deserta schang by Rena Kasimu and her study group. In the last few years, Rena's study group determined the content of 6,7-dehydroroyleanone and salvianolic acid K in the root, steam, leave, flower of Salvia deserta Schang with HPLC. They did animal acute toxicity test and studied the effects of twelve kinds of water soluble extracts on eliminating hydroxyl radicals in Fenton reaction for the first time by spin trapping-electron spin resonance(ESR) method. And they did some rudimental research on Salvia deserta Schang by the technology ofasexual reproduction. We would find naturally occurring from Salvia deserta Schang which prevent diabetic chronic complications. Different extractions of Salvia deserta Schang were extramined for inhibitory effects on human muscle aldose reductase. MeOH extraction of the root of Salvia deserta Schang showed a high activity on aldose reductase. In addition, I and my tutor Rena Kasimu went on researching Salvia deserta Schang. We have finished the structures of eight compounds by chemical reactions ajid spectroscopic means such as UV, IR,1 H-NMR,13 C-NMR, 2D-NMR, MS and identified them as Hexacosanoic acid ( I ); B-Sitosterol (II); 6,7-Dedydroroyleanone (III); 3-(tetrahydrofuran[3,4-c]phenyl)-acrylic acid (IV); Oleanolic Acid (V); 5-hydroxy-4',6,7-trimethoxy flavone (VI); Rosmarinic acid (VD); Salvianolic acid K (VM). We did pharmacognosy microscopical identification of Salvia deserta Schang. And we did a research for seed of Salvia deserta Schang characteristic germination. This test established firm foundament for further developing and utilizing Salvia deserta Schang.
