Objects: To investigate the effect of splint therapy on TMD, and evaluate the effect of the injection of sodium hyaluronate into TMJ combined with splint therapy.Material and methods: Patients were from the TMJ department of College of stamatology, Wuhan University during June 2002 and June 2003. Patients were randomly divided into two groups. One group recived splint therapy only (S group), the other group also underwent the treatment of sodium hyaluronate injection(SH group). Sodium hyaluronate were injected into patients' inferior articular space every one week for five times. After three months 76 patients were able to be called back. The S group had 37 patients, the other group had 39 patients. The mastication and articulation habits, the condition of teeth and occlusion of TMD patients were recorded, and impressions were made at the first time, then jaw relationship were transferred into articulators .After that, cast wax patterns into heat-curing resin. Put these stabilization and repositioning splints into patients' mouths and ground them properly. SH group patients received the therapy of sodium hyaluronate injection simultaneously. Results: I It was found that the major syndromes of TMD were alleviated in 70.3% of those who only received the treatment with splint , and that II those who also underwent injection treatment showed a better result (89.7%/70.3%).Conclusions: I Splint is an effective and conservative treatment modality for TMD. II Splint and sodium hyaluronate maybe have cooperation effects on TMD.
