Objective :To study the expressions of survivin, transforming growth factor beta 1 ( TGF- β1i) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in renal cell carcinoma(RCC) , and their effects on the growth of human renal cell carcinoma. Methods: The expressions of survivin, TGF- β1 and COX-2 in 30 specimens of human renal cell carcinoma and 20 normal kidneys as control were detected by immunohistochemical method (SP method). Results: The positive expression rate of survivin in renal cell carcinoma (63.3%) was higher than that in normal kidneys (25%). They have significant differences ( P<0.05 ). And survivin index was correlated with clinical stages ( P<0.05 ). The positive stain of TGF- β1 in RCC was significantly higher than that in normal kidneys ( P<0.05 ). No sighificant relationship was obsevrved among TGF- β1 expression and different clinical grades of the renal cancer ( P>0.05 ). There were significant differences between the positive rate of COX-2 in RCC and normal kidneys ( P<0.05 ). But the positive expression was not related significantly with the clinical stages. Conclusions: Survivin, TGF- β1 and COX-2 play an important role in the development of renal cell carcinoma. They would be helpful in diagnosis of RCC, especially survivin may act as a predictor of survival. COX-2 inhibitors may prevent the carcinomgenesis, development and metastasis of RCC.
