Objective: To study factors which influence the prognosis of severe hepatitis and to adapt measures in time in order to reduce mortality. Methods: 101 patients were studied with retrospective method and SPSS 10.0 for windows for data processing. Results: In 101 patients with severe hepatitis, 35 patients recovered and 66 patients died. Comparing data of the two groups, the results show that patient's age, serum total bilirubin, serum cholesterin, activity of prothrombin and the number of complications are significantly different between the recovered patients and the deceased patients. Pathogen, serum albumin, serum alanine amininotransferase, serum aspartate transaminase and blood sugar have no relation with prognosis. According to the data , 45 factors which may influence prognosis were assorted and put into Logistic regression model. The analytic results show that some factors including patient's sex, age, serum sodium, serum creatinine and the activity of prothrombin are related to prognosis. Patients with hepatorenal syndrome and hepatic encephalopathy also have poor prognosis. Seven of these risk factors which were screened were put into Logistic regression model again to evaluate their significance. The final results show that five of these factors (sex, age, serum creatinine, serum sodium, the activity of prothrombin) that were further studied had a significant effect on thefinal prognosis. Conclusions: Patient's total bilirubin and cholesterin and the number of complications are important factors to evaluate the prognosis of severe hepatitis; Patient's sex, age, serum creatinine and sodium and the activity of prothrombin are very important signs to evaluate and influence the prognosis of severe hepatitis .
