AIMTo investigate the expression of interleukin-5 in intestinal mucosa of patients with inflammatory bowel disease and its relationship with disease.MATERIALS AND METHODSSpecimens of 7 Crohn disease and 25 ulcerative colitis patients and 30 controls were studied by immunohistochemical staining. The clinical diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease was confirmed by the routine radiologic, endoscopic, and histologic criteria. All controls had normal colonoscopy, and the mucosal biopsies were histologically normal.RESULTSImmunohistochemical staining analysis localized the expression of interleukin-5 to intestinal epithelial cells and lamina propria (eosinophils, mainly). Staining was more intense in the intestinal epithelial cells of active ulcerative colitis compared with in that of Crohn disease, but there was no significant difference (u=0.284, p=0.777 > 0.05). While there was significant difference between ulcerative colitis and controls (u=5.591, P=0.000<0.01). And there was...
