Objective :To compare the effect of folic acid and tetrahydrobiopterin(BH4) on the amount of nitric oxide in hypercholesterol rabbitsMethod: 24 rabbits were randomly devided into 4 groups: normal diet (group A), hypercholesteroldiet(groupB),BH4 plus hypercholesteroldiet(groupC),folic acid plus hypercholesteroldiet (groupD). After 60 days, serum talcholesterol(TC),nitric oxide(NO) were determined. At the same time concentration of urinary pterin was detected. Data was disposed by statistical software SPSS 11.0. P<0. 05 means statistical significance. p<0.01 means obviously statistical significance. Results: The amount of TC in group B was the highest among these groups (P<0.01).The activity of NO in group C and D was higher than that in groupB(P<0.01). there is no statistical difference of the activity of NO between group C and group D. Compaired with other three groups, neopterin is obviously enhanced, where as biopterin is lower in group B(p<0.05).Conclusion: It suggests that folic acid and tetrahydrobiopterin(BH4)can elevate the amount of nitric oxide(NO), reduce all kinds of oxygenfreeradicals and decline the level of hpidperoxidation. There is no statistical difference between them. Both of them can increase concentrstion of tetrahydrobiopterin in hypercholesterol rabbits (through detect Urinary pterin). Sequentially play a role of antagonizing lipid peroxidation and preserving endothelial functionGraduate student:zhang hua (cardiovascular medcine) Directed by : Jian-Hui Tian (preofessor)...
