BACKGROUND The invasion and metastasis is the main character of carcinoma and plays major role in recurrence. Studies have found that this procession is always accompanied with the high level of MMPs, especially the MMP-2 has a very close relationship with many pathological damage. Some early studies imply that high level of lanthanide has some hereditary toxicity, while low level lanthanide may be very effective against cancer. As the research of lanthanide goes further every day in the regions of medicine and biochemistry, it will play more important role in the life sciense.OBJECTIVE To identify the relation between lanthanide chloride and Matrix Mentalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2).METHOD Applying MTT, RT -PCR, zymograph and Western Blotting, some carcinoma cell lines and primary cultured cell were tested to see the effect of lanthanide chloride on cell growth and MMP-2 activity. RESU LT The results from MTT, RT PCR, gelatin zymography and Western blot analysis revealed that lanthanide chloride suppressed cell growth and MMP-2 activity in these cells in concentration dependent manner. CONCLUSION Collectively, these results suggest that lanthanide chloride is a potent drug for inhibition of MMP-2 expression in carcinoma cells.
