Beixixin, the herb of Asarum heterotropoides Fr. Schmidt var. mandshuricum (Maxim.) Kitag. belonging to the family of aristolochiaceae, is mainly distributed in northeast part of China. It has the effects of expelling wind and clearing away cold, alleviating pain and warming the lung to reduce watery phlegm. In order to control the quality of the cultivating process and the quality of the crude drug, the simultaneous analyzing of effective constituents and toxic compounds has been carried out at different growing time. In this paper, essential oil and methyleugenol were taken as the marker substance of effective constituents and safrole and aristolochic acid A as that of toxic compounds, the contents of the four compounds in the different parts of the plants collected in different time and processed by different method have been determined by GC-MS and HPLC and recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia. The total amout of each marker substance was analyzed by statistics. As results, among the samples collected at different years and different development stages, that collected during the after fruting stage of the last 10 days of Augest, grown for 6 years, has a higher content of the effective substance and a lower content of the poisonous substance, the collecting time was set on the early autumn of the sixth growing year. For the processing method, drying at shade is the best selection.
