Purpose: Trigeminal neuralgia, as one of the most agony suffering, its pathogeny or pathogenesis has not been understood completely till now. Many previously studies paid attention to the summaring of different clinical treatments, however, the foundmental study on trigeminal neuralgia was less reported. In this study ,we measured mandibular bone mineral density with a microdensitometer to probe into bone metabolism of trigeminal neuralgia's patients. In order to find the molecular mechanism of the bone metabolism of trigeminal neuralgia's patients, we measured the calcitonin receptor genotypes with PCR-RFLP.Methods: Part one: We measured mandibular bone mineral density of trigeminal neuralgia's patients in mental region. Comparisons(by age) were made between trigeminal neuralgia's patients and the normal subjects. Part two: The calcitonin receptor genotypes of all patients were measured with PCR-RFLP.Results: 1. The bone mineral density of patients with trigeminal neuralgia is lower than the normal subjects, witch demonstrate abnormity of bone metabolism in the patients with trigeminal neuralgia. 2. As other skeletal bone , the bone mineral density of mandible is significantly affected with age, witch demonstrate the skeletal and mandibular metabolism are related. 3. There was no different distribution of the calcitonin receptor genotypes between healthey population and the trigeminal neuralgia, suggesting no directly association was observed between the gene polymorphisms of calcitonin receptor and trigeminal neuralgia.Concluding: 1. Trigeminal neuralgia correlated with bone metabolism. 2.Change of calcitonin receptor genotypes and the expression of calcitonin will directly disturb the biological effect while calcitonin combine with calcitonin receptor. 3. This study primaily excluded the relationships between the calcitonin receptor and trigeminal neuralgia, suggesting that it be important to develop the relationships between calcitonin receptor and trigeminal neuralgia from the expression of calcitonin receptor gene.
