Objective: Nasal and sinonasal inverted papillomas (NSIPs) are rare benigntumors of nasal epithelium with high recurrence rates and malignant transformation potential. Their etiology is still uncertain, and the mechanism of their growth has not yet been fully described. The aim of the present study was to investigate the expression and clinical significance of p53 and PCNA in NSIPs. Furthermore, we wanted to study the clinical characteristics of NSIPs.Method: Nasal and sinonasal inverted papilloma samples were obtained aftersurgical removal of tumor in 40 patients and nasal polyps (NPs) samples were obtained after surgical removal in 10 patients of our hospital. Immunohistochemical staining was performed on 50 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded biopsies comprising 10 biopsies from nasal polyps samples and 40 biopsies from inverted papillomas.Result: The level of p53 and PCNA overexpression were defined as more than5% positive nuclei. The overexpression of p53 and PCNA were significantly higher in NSIPs than in NPs (p<0.05, respectively). The expression of p53 and PCNA seemed to be positive correlation to epithelial cell proliferation in NSIPs (p <0.05, respectively). The expression of p53 and PCNA were not related to recurrence and malignant transformation (p>0.05, respectively). The level of epithelial cell proliferation in NSIPs was not related to recurrence and malignant...
