Objective:Nasal and sinoasal inverted papilloma is a rare benign tumor of epithelial origin with aggressive evolution, bone destruction, recurrence, and malignant transformation. As a classic anti-oncogene,the role of p53 has been widely confirmed on the tumorigenesis and growth.However,p63,a member of the p53 family, the biological action and the expression of which on the recurrence and development of NSIPs were rarely reported. The objective of this study is to investigate the biological significance in its recurrence tendency, canceration potential and the synergistic action between them by detecting the expression of p53 and p63.Furthermore,the investigation will reveal the clinical characteristics of NSIPs.Methods:Forty specimens with NSIPs and ten with squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)were selected in the experiment. All the specimens were sorted into four groups, which were NSIP,recurrent NSIP,canceration NSIP, and squamous cell carcinoma. The expressions of p53 and p63 were analyzed according to the quantitative immunohistochemical analysis. Results:Significant increasing expressions of p53 were observed in NSIPs,recurrent NSIPs,canceration NSIPs,and SCC(p<0.05).According to intercomparsion, the prominent differentiation in the expression of p53 was detected between NSIPs and canceration NSIPs,NSIPs and SCC.The expressions of p63 were positive in all the groups. The expression of p63 was mostly found in the basic layer in NSIPs and strengthened in the recurrent NSIPs and canceration NSIPs in almost whole epithelial layer. Significant increased expressions of p63 were observed in NSIPs, recurrent NSIPs and NSIPs with carcinoma(p<0.05).The expression of p53 in all groups of NSIPs had a positive relationship with it of p63(rs=0.868, p =0.000).Conclusion:In our experiment the expressions of p53 played an important role in the malignancy of NSIPs.On the other hand the overexpression of p63 also seemed to be related to malignant transformation of NSIPs.So the overexpression of p63 could be exploited for discriminate-diagnostic purpose and may be adopted as an index of prognosis.P63 and p53 expression were not consistent, and therefore the association can improve the veracity of diagnosis. The expression of p53 in NSIPs had a positive relationship with it of p63,but the cooperation mechanisms of them was not clear, which worth our further study.
