Clinical Research Of Complications In Rectal Cancer Surgery

Objective: To investigate the common surgical complications in rectal cancer and explore the causes of the surgical complications in rectal cancer and the treatments. We can make progress in surgical cure and avoid complications. To cure complications in time and effectively can release the patients from pain to cure diseases and make them better in life and prognosis probably.Methods: 124 patients with the surgical complications in rectal cancer from Jan 1994 to Jan 2002 in the general surgery department of the Hospital of Shandong Province(820 patients) were studied. The causes, diagnoses, treatments, and prognoses were rewiewed retrospectively.Results: The morbidity of the surgical complications in rectal cancer was 15.1% in the group, and it was 30%~40% in the documents, so we can adopt it. The major complications were stomal complications (21 cases,2.56%), anastomosis complications (15 cases, 1.83%),postoperative intestinal obstruction (31 cases, 3.78%),wound complications (25 cases, 3.05%),bleeding (6 cases, 0.73%),ureter damage (2 cases, 0.24%),urethra damage (3 cases, 0.37%),deep venous thrombosis in the lower extremities (LDVT)(3 cases, 0.37%),urinary retention (4 cases, 0.49%),sexual disorder (7 cases, 0.85%),pelvic hydrops (7 cases, 0.85%),etc. Most party of 124 patients with the surgical complications in rectal cancer were diagnosed and treated timely and correctly to cure or progress. Some serious complications bring the patents more pain, for example, shrunk colostomy (1 case) need fistulation again,small anastomosis (2 cases) need colostomy, pelvic-peritoneal hernia (1 case) need ileum resection and anastomosis, bleeding sacral veins(2 cases) threatened patients, ureter (1 case) was cut.Conclusions: Anatomy of rectum and anal canal is more complicated, so the morbidity of the surgical complications in rectal cancer is relatively high. The complications affect the patents in life quality and threaten them because of many sorts and complicated causes. Proficiency in mastering the possible surgical complications rectal cancer can avoid complications and treat rectal cancer effectively to release the patients from pain as possible as we can and make them live better. The morbidity of the surgical complications in rectal cancer in the group was lower, and we can adopt it.
