| [ Objective ] Understanding the prevalence and tendency of infant mortality rate(IMR) in China, and studying the main factors influencing the IMR level and tendency in china, in order to provide the scientific evidence for instituting effective policy for lowering IMR of our country[Methods] The 116 Maternal and Child Health surveillance regions were chosen as the study sites. The regional data on socioeconomic, educational, communication, social insurance, hygeine and demography status were collected. Furthermore, the officials of some surveillance regions were interviewed in this study. The quantitative methods, such as correlation analysis and grey relation analysis, and qualitative methods were applied to find out the main factors influencing IMR level and tendency, and to approach the possible paths and styles by which these factors took effect.[Results] In 2002, the average IMR of China is 29.2‰. IMR was lowest in coastal areas (14‰), followed by inland areas (24.6‰), and outlying areas (44‰). The rural IMR were higher than the urban IMR. From 1996 to 2002, the average IMR in China has decreased, but the pace of IMR decrease among areas differs greatly. IMR of the coastal and rich areas decreased more rapidly than that of other areas. In richer areas, allocation of health resources, utilization of health service and management of fluid population were the main factors influencing IMR level and tendency. In poorer areas, on the other hand, regional economic status and income were the main factors .[Conclusions] Despite the average IMR in China has declined to a lower level, IMR of different areas were different obviously. The IMR were always higher in countries than in cities. IMR were affected by multiple factors. In different areas, the factors influenced IMR by different styles and ways, at different extent. In order to control and lower IMR in China, the government should pay more attention and make out applicable measures to solve key problems which limit declination of IMR. |
