Objective: To evaluate the effect and reliability of triamcinolone acetonide (TA) on crystoid macular edema (CME).Methods: There were 32 cases (37 eyes), including 14 cases (14 eyes) whose CME was caused by retinal vein occlusion (RVO), 18 cases (23 eyes) by diabetic retinopathy (DR). All these cases shoud be examined detailedly by some special devices, including slip-lamp microscope, binocular indirect ophthalmoscope, fluorescence fundus angiography (FFA), and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The therapy was executed in operation room. Each one accepted TA 4mg/0.1ml injected in vitreous cavity. The chief index included vision acruity, intraocular pressure (IOP), thickness of macular, intraocular inflammation, and lens changes. Results: Visual acuity in all cases had been improved except for 6 eyes. CME in all cases had been relieved or extincted to some extent. But there were recurrence of CME in 4 eyes 4 months after the therapy, but they could be extincted after intraocular injection again. IOP in 12 eyes was increased to 21 mmHg, and it could incline to normal level after using some medicine. Conclusion: TA injected in vitreous cavity is effective on CME, but the long-term effect should be observed for a long time. Temporary high IOP is the most common side effect.
