ObjectiveTo evaluate the influence of the changes in retinal thickness of the fovea after trabeculectomy .MethodsWe studied 68 eyes of 52 patients with POAG who underwent trabeculectomy for glaucoma. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) examination was performed in macular central fovea of 68 eyes before surgery, 1 week, 1 month and 2 month after surgery. All patients were divided into two groups according to pre-operative intraocular pressure: Intraocular pressure ( IOP) of group A were between 25mmHg and 50mmHg;IOP of group B were between 15mmHg and 25mmHg. The macular retinal thickness was measured by the computer image a-nalysis system of OCT.ResultsThere was no statistically significant differentiation of macular retinal thickness in fovea of glaucoma between preoperation and postoperation (P >0. 05). The thickness of macular central fovea of group A was significantly thicker ( P < 0. 05 on week 1;P < 0. 05 on month 1) than that of glaucoma before trabeculectomy;it was significantly thicker(P >0.05 on month 2) than that of glaucoma before trabeculectomy. The thickness of macular central fovea of group B was notsignificantly thicker ( P > 0. 05 on week 1;month 1;month 2) than that of glaucoma before trabeculectomy. The increase in macular central fovea thickness of glaucoma that underwent trabeculectomy was positively correlation with change of intraocular pressure after surgery.ConclusionsMild macular central fovea edema was found within the first month following trabeculectomy, mostly in high intraocular pressure. The influnce of the trabeculectomy to the macular central fovea edema was reversiblely, slightly.
