Methods: MMP-9,TIMP-1 and VEGF of placenta were determined by immunohistological method and compared between normal pregnancy (42 cases) and pregnancies accompanied by severe PIH(42 cases). Results: 1 MMP-9,TIMP-1 and VEGF were located on trophobiast and endothelial cell of blood . The level of MMP-9 was significantly lower in PIH group than that in normal group (P<0.01),but the expression of TIMP-1 in the placenta from the normal group and the PIH group was undifferentiated (P>0.05) .The expression of VEGF was significantly lower in PIH group than that in normal group (P<0.01). 2 The weight of newborn with severe PIH was lower the normal newborn which have the same gestational age (P<0.01). Conclusion: Abnormal expression of MMP-9,TIMP-1 and VEGF have a relationship with the invasion of trophobiast and influnce the growth of the newbown. They may play a role in the cause of severe PIH.
