Objective : To investigate the clinical significance of the relationship among the levels of the interleukin-1β and interleukin-6 in aqueous humor and the grade of posterior capsular opacification in rabbits after extracapsular cataract extraction. Methods : Extracapsular cataract extraction was performed in twenty-eight New Zealand rabbits, all experimental rabbit eyes were observed via zoom-photoslit -lamp microscope on 1 3 7 14 30d and 90d, Meanwhile ,aqueous humor was drawn for determining IL-1β and IL-6 contents . According to the grade of posterior capsular opacification , the rabbits were divided into three groups . The aqueous humors were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with the Quantikine ELISA Kit syetemResults : IL-1β and IL-6 levels in aqueous humor were significantly higher at 3, 7 14d and 30d postoperatively in all rabbits, which correlated to the grade of posterior capsular opacification .In the postoperative 7~14d,the IL-1β and the IL-6 inaqueous humor reached their maximum level in all rabbit eyes. Conclusion : IL-1β and IL-6 may be one of cruciral agents in the formation of posterior capsular opacification after ECCE.
