Objective To explore the concentrations of matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) and humanchorionic gonadotropin beta (β -hCG) in serum of women during term andthreatened preterm labor.Methods MMP-9 and β -hCG in serum were evaluated in 66 healthy pregnant women. A1 group consisted of 14 women evaluated for preterm rupture of membranes, the pregnancy outcome was preterm labor. A2 group consisted of 16 women evaluated for preterm contractions the pregnancy outcome was preterm labor. B group consisted of 16 women evaluated for term labor, C group consisted of 20 women without evidence of labor chosen by clinicans at the time of routine prenatal visits. Serum MMP-9 and β -hCG concentrations were measured using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and radioimmunoassay (RIA).Results 1:The MMP-9 levels of serum in preterm labor A1 and A2 had no difference (89.41±56.13 ng/ml vsll6.88±122.55 ng/ml, P=0.951);The β -hCG levels of serum in preterm labor Al and A2 had no difference (89.41±56.13 mlU/ml vs116.88±122.55 mlU/ml, P=0.294) . 2:The MMP-9 levers of serum in term labor were higher than in preterm delivery (263.56 ± 237.56 ng/ml vsl03.55±97.24 ng/ml, P=0.001);The P -hCG levers of serum in term labor were lower than in preterm delivery (4827.22±3080.42mIU/ml vs 7483.38±5934.76mIU/ml,P=0.197) . 3:The MMP-9 and β -hCG levers of serum in term labor were higher than in normal group (263.56 ± 237.56 ng/ml vs 44.74 ± 34.47 ng/ml, P<0.001;4827.22 + 3080.42 mlU/ml vs 3061.93 ± 1805.54mIU/ml, P=0.036 = . 4:The MMP-9 and P -hCG levers of serum in preterm labor were higher than in normal group (103.55±97.24 ng/ml vs 44.74 + 34.47 ng/ml, P=0.005;7483.38±5934.76 mlU/ml vs 3061.93 + 1805.54mIU/ml, P-0.002). 5:There was no correlation of MMP-9 and P -hCG in materal serum (r=0.136, p=0.278) .Conclusion 1 :The serum MMP-9 and P -hCG levels were significantly higher in preterm delibery than normal group. High serum MMP-9 and 3 -hCG levels may be one of the reasons of preterm delivery. 2:The P -hCG levels of serum in preterm labor and term labor had no difference;The MMP-9 levels of serum in preterm labor and term labor had difference. MMP-9 and P-hCG may play an role in preterm labor. 3:The serum MMP-9 and P -hCG levels may be used as an index of clinical prediction of preterm delibery and academic thereunder for clinical treat.
