Many cytokines play important roles in pathogenic process of periodontitis, among them IL-6 has close relation with periodontitis. IL-6 can not only inducethe disruption of periodontal tissue directly, but also affect the process ofinflammation reaction and immune reaction further, and aggravate the disruptionof periodontal tissue. The production and effects of IL-6 are regulated by manyfactors. The determination of IL-6 and inhibition of the secretion and disruptioneffect have certain clinic value in diagnosis and treatment of periodontitis. In this experiment, the expressions of IL-6 mRNA and protein in normalgum and lesion gum in patients with periodontal disease were detected withimmunohistochemistry in order to study the relationship between IL-6 andpathogenic mechanism. So the effective method to regulate the IL-6 could befound to provide theoretical basis for diagnosis and therapy of periodontitis. Theresults showed that the expression levels of IL-6 mRNA and protein in normalgum tissues were lower, the expression levels of IL-6 mRNA and protein inpatients with periodontitis were significantly higher than those in normalcontrol (P<0.01). The results indicated that IL-6 played an important role inpathogenic process and had closer relation with periodontits. To detect theexpressions of IL-6 mRNA and protein in gum can be used to diagnoseperiodontitis promptly and correctly, and guide therapy, judge curative effectsand prognosis.
