Objective: The sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) is commonly and frequently encountered in otorhinolaryngology, and it is also a kind of disease that has not yet known well up to now. Presently many therapy methods are applied to SHL on clinic, and many scholars also do a great deal of research, but owing to its special clinical characteristics, such as the unclear pathogeny, prognosis affected by many factors and the existence of hearing recovery etc., there is no method can be generally accepted .Based on the present condition in treatment and ideas embodying the characteristic and the advantages of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we can use a comprehensive therapeutics of TCM to treat with SHL in order to investigate the exact curative effect of TCM and seek a new valid treatment method of SHL.Method: The experiment group, composed of SHL patients coming from the first hospital of Guangzhou TCM university from 2005. 12 to 2006. 2, was treated with a Chinese compositive therapy project, which was made up of Chinese herbs therapy, injection therapy, acupuncture treatment and sound information therapy. Taking out of comparing group by 1: 1 from the SHL cases in the past five years with some standard, they carry on the historical research with the experiment group in order to investigate the curative effect of SHL which is cured by TCM therapeutics and the correlative factors influencing the treatment efficacy.Result: (1) Curative effect: both groups had 35 cases, they were comparative in the illness duration, age, the proportion of vertigo and the degree of hearing loss (P>0. 05) . In the experiment group, 8 cases recovered, 8 cases had notable effect, 8 cases were effective, and 11 cases were ineffective. The total effective rate was 68.6%, and the curative rate was 22.9%. In the control group, 3 cases recovered, 12 cases had notable effect,4 cases were effective, and 16 cases were ineffective. The total effective rate was 54. 3%, and the curative rate was 8. 6%. Both the effective rate and the curative rate had no statistical significance between the two groups(P>0. 05) . But the treatment duration of experiment group is obviously less than the control group (P<0.05) .The composite therapy project of TCM saved time and money for patients. (2)The correlative factors with treatment efficacy: in two groups, the treatment efficacy was correlated with illness duration (P<0. 05) , but it was not correlated with the age and the degree of hearing loss (P>0.05) . The treatment efficacy of cases with vertigo had significant difference with the cases without vertigo in the experiment group(P<0. 05), but there was no significant difference in the control group(P>0. 05). In experiment group, there was no correlation between traditional Chinese syndrome and treatment efficacy (P>0.05) , and curative effect of cases without hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) was higher than cases with HBO (P<0. 05) .Conclusion: (1)35 cases were treated with the Chinese medicine composite method, as a result the total effective rate was 68.6% and the curative rate was 22.9%. (2)The illness duration is one of the important factors affecting the curative effect. It is better to examine in two weeks after you have got the ill, otherwise, you will loss the best examining time. That' s to say, SHL needs to examine in time, in case exceeding two weeks, it will get bad prognosis. (3)Whether there is any relationship with treatment efficacy and age> vertigo or the degree of hearing loss is not remarkable , it needs more research. (4) From the study, we also observed that when HBO was treated to SHL with the composite therapeutics of TCM , made treatment efficacy lower, so we should use HBO carefully.
