Objective Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor(VEGF), VEGF-1(FLT-1) and VEGFR-2(KDR) play a crucial role in the regulation of tumor growth and metastasis. The current study examined the significance of serum VEGF, Flt-1 and KDR levels to evaluate the changes of serum its in glioma patients ,and the in relations with clinicopathalogy parameters response to treatment and survival in patients with glioma. Methods Between January 2003 and December 2005,serum VEGF,Flt-1 and KDR levels were analyzed in 46 patients with glioma no-undergoing any treatment,33 patients undergoing primary treatment (surgery and radiothereapy),and 39 patients with brain metastasis, as well as in 50 healthy controls. Serum VEGF,Flt-1 and levels were assessed by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay(ELISA) before and within 5 weeks after treatment. Results Serum VEGF, Flt-1 and KDR levels were higher in patients with glioma than in the healthy control (P=0.001,P=0.043 and P=0.045 respectively). The compare glioma group with brain metastasis group significantly difference about levels of VEGF was found (P=0.032) .The pretherapeutic serum levels of VEGF and Flt-1 have significantly difference with disease recurrence or persistence after treatment (P=0.026 and P=0.038).In additional, the serum levels of VEGF correlated significantly with levels of Flt-1 and KDR(r=0.456 P<0.01 and r=0.398 P<0.02).Conclusions The serum levels VEGF, Flt-1 and have potential usefulness as biologic markers in the diagnosis and evaluation treatment effect of glioma.
