Objective: After esophagectomy for cancer,many patients have the symptom such as belching , nausea, abdominal distention and diarrhoea. The commonly used methods for studying the function of the intrathoracic stomach after esophagectomy are esophageal manometry, 24-hour esophageal pH monitoring and gastric scientigraphy. However, these methods are invasive, so that can not be used in patients who just undergoing esophagectomy. In the present study, we used noninvasive electrogastrography to measure gastric myoelectrical activity of the intrathoracic stomach. The level of blood motilin and gastrin was also determined and its correlation with the changes of electrogastrogram was also analyzed.Materials and Methods: Thirty-two patients who ever underwent esophagectomy for cancer in the Department of Thoracic surgery, The Fourth Hospital, Hebei Medical University between December 2004 and December 2005 were selected randomly. There were 19 male and 13 female, with the mean age of 63.2 years. There were 22 esophageal carcinoma and 10 carcinoma of gastric cardia.
