Chemical constituents in the whole herbs and cell cultures of Saussurea involucrate were studied, and progress of studies on Saussurea involucrate and on the effects of factors on flavonoids accumulation in plant callus and cell cultures were also reviewed in this dissertation.By using the chromatography techniques, 17 compounds were isolated from the 95% ethanol extracts of this plant's whole herbs. On the basis of chemical methods and spectroscopic technique (IR, UV, EI-MS, FAB-MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, HMQC, HMBC, NOESY), their structures were determined as β-sitosterol (1), daucosterol (2), jaceosidin (3), hispidulin (4), β-phenyllactic acid (5), succimic acid (6), eupafolin (7), protocatechuic acid (8), quercetin (9), quercetin-3-O-α-L-rhamnoside (10), quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucoside (11), rutin (12), 11β,13-dihydrodehydrocostus-lactone-8-O-β-D-glucoside (13), syringin (14), 3α-hydroxyl-11β,13-dihydrodehydrocostuslactone -8-O-β-D-glucoside (15), 11β,13-dihydrodehydrocostuslactone-8-O-[6'-O-acetyl-β-D-glucoside] (16), flazin (17). Among of them, 16 was a new compound, compound 17 was isolated from this family for the first time, compounds 5, 7,8 were isolated from this genus for the first time, and 1, 2, 6,11 were isolated from this specie for the first time.In the meantime,five compounds were isolated from the cell cultures of Saussurea involucrate and determined as β-sitosterol (X1), daucosterol (X2), octameric 3-hydroxybutanoic acid (X3), succimic acid (X4), syringin (X5), all of these compounds were isolated from this materials for the first time. The pharmacological activities of the compounds isolated from the plant were reviewed, and the structural and spectroscopic features of flavones and sesquiterpene lactones isolated from Saussurea involucrate were analysized.
