PURPOSE: To investigate the clinical and auxiliary examinational characteristics of complex partial seizure (CPS) epilepsy. Furthermore, to obtain some knowledge about the etiological factors, clinical manifestations and different EEG results of CPS.METHODS: 82 patients who were diagnosed CPS in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from February 2005 to February 2006 were enrolled in the study. The detailed information about these patients were collected and analyzed.RESULTS: (1) Patients in different age groups appear no significant differences according to the sexuality. (2) Definite etiological factors are found in 35 CPS patients, meanwhile, different causes exhibit according to different age groups. (3) The clinical manifestations are diverse. 21 patients are with auras and 21 patients with various automatisms. (4) There are total 54(65.85%) patients whose EEG results manifest abnormal, in addition, age and sexuality have no association with the EEG changes. (5) Among 63 patients having got CT or/and MRI exam, 30(47.62%) are found abnormal.CONCLUSITION:1. CPS patients in different age appear different etiological factors.2. Patients in different sex show no significant differences in morbility of CPS.3. Temporal lobe and hippocampus are the main seizure onset regions, even if frontal and occipital lobes appear the target regions for some CPS patients.4. EEG exam is important for the diagnosis of CPS, furthermore, the data show no relationship with age or sexuality.5. Neuroimaging examination such as CT and MRI are helpful to analyze the etiological factors of CPS.
