[Objective] 1. To explore whether the motor nerve baby-sitting could prevent denervated skeletal muscle from atrophy.2. To observe whether the motor nerve baby-sitting could improve the effect of delayed nerve anastomosis and promote the functional recovery.[Methods] 1. 32 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 2 groups, with 16 each. In group A, the left musculocutaneous nerve was transected completely and the distal end was ligated to prevent nerve regeneration; Group B received the same nerve transaction, but the distal end was anastomosed to the purely motor medial pectoral nerve (nerve baby-sitting), and the right sides in both groups were served as self control. In 2, 4, 6, 8weeks after surgery, the behavioral test (grooming test) were performed and the degree of the biceps brachii atrophy were observed, the fibrillation potentials or the reinnervation potentials, wet muscle weights, muscle fiber cross-section area, and the activity of Na~+-K~+-ATPase of the biceps brachii were measured 。 2. 16 Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 2 groups, with 8 each. In the group C, the left musculocutaneous nerve was transected and then anastomosed to its proximal end 6 weeks later; In the group D, the musculocutaneous nerve was transected and coapted to the purely motor medial pectoral nerve immediately (nerve baby-sitting), 6 weeks later, the musculocutaneous nerve was separated from the medial pectoral nerve, and reanastomosed to its proximal end. In the animal model, the left limbs were chose as experimental groups, the right limbs as control groups. 6 and 12 weeks after the second surgery, behavioral test (grooming test) were performed and the degree of the biceps brachii atrophy were observed, the latent period and the maximum of the action potentials of the biceps brachii were detected, the wet muscle weights, muscle fiber cross-section area and the activity of Na~+-K~+-ATPase of the biceps brachii were measured.[Results] 1.
