OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of aerobic metabolism and morphosis of rat sternohyoideus muscles after injection botulinum toxin type A with enzyme histochemistry technique in order to provide scientific base for clinical use.METHOD: Ninety old male rats were divided into 18 groups: (1)9 treatment groups, the rats were sacrificed at the 30th minute, 6th hour , 1st day ,3rd day,7th day,2nd week,4th week,6th week and the 8th week after injection BTX-A2.5u(0.1ml) into sternohyoideus muscles;(2)9 control groups,0.1ml saline injection was taken and the rats were sacrificed at the 30th minute, 6th hour, 1st day ,3rd day,7th day,2nd week,4th week,6th week and the 8th week after treatment. There are 5 rats in each group. Enzyme histochemistric methods were used to observe the aerobic metabolism and morphologic changes of sternohyoideus muscles in rats at different time after BTX -A and saline injection by light microscope. Spss 11.5 software was used for statistical analysis.
