Objective: To investigate the serum level of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in virus hepatitis patients and the relationship between VEGF and hepatic function index, regeneration as well as prognosis. Methods: The serum level of VEGF in 120 patients with virus hepatitis and 12 healthy individual (control group) was detected by ELISA technology.Results:(1) The serum level of VEGF of 120 patients with virus hepatitis was higher than of the healthy individual (P=0.000), the serum level of VEGF of the liver cirrhosis group was lower than of healthy individual (P=0.025). There was no statistical difference between the serum level of VEGF of patients with chronic virus hepatitis and of healthy individual (P=0.279). The serum level of VEGF of acute virus hepatitis or of severe hepatitis patients was significantly increased comparing with healthy individual (P=0.000). (2) The serum level of VEGF was positive correlation with AFP, (rs=0.914,P=0.000), and have no relationship with the serum level of alanine, aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, total protein and albumin. (3) There was difference in serum level of VEGF among the severe hepatitis patients: Serum VEGF level in survival group was more elevated than in healthy individual (P=0.000), Serum VEGF level in die group was slightly elevated than in healthy individual but there was not statistical significance (P=0.202). At convalescence, the Serum VEGF levels in the survivor of severe hepatitis patients were significance more elevated than initial stages. The Serum VEGF levels in the fatal hepatitis gravis patients show a decrease tendency in extrimis.
