In this paper, the antioxidation, anti-free radical, antitumor activity and components characterization of five volatile oils were studied. In order to evaluate the effect of volatile oils (Myristica fragrans Houtt., Cupressus sempervirens Linn., Syringa vulgaris Linn., Melaleuca alternifolia (Maiden et Betche) Cheel, Pelargonium graveolens L' Her.) on MDA generation spontaneously in homogenates of liver, we used in vitro lipid peroxidation model. Each volatile oil could inhibit MDA spontaneous generation markedly. The analysis of variance of different volatile oils indicated that different high dose test groups had statistical difference. The inhibition rate, from high to low, was SEO, CEO, NEO and TEO. The inhibition rate of the PEO high dose test group was the lowest. The antioxidation activity of SEO and CEO were better than synthesize antioxidant. Each volatile oil could markedly inhibit the MDA generation in liver inducedby CCl4. The inhibition capacity of MDA between 0.1% CEO and 0.1% TBHQ(P=0.532) and between 0.01% CEO and VE 0.01% (P=0.086) did not havestatistical difference. The inhibition rate of MDA between 0.1% SEO and 0.1%...
