BackgroundEsophageal cancer (EC) is one of the six most common malignant diseases in the world. Epidemiologically, EC is charactered by its dramatic geographic difference, the ratio for incidence rates between the high and low incidence areas could be as high as 500:1. Linzhou city (formerly Linxian) and nearby counties in Henan Province have been well recognized as the highest incidence area for EC in the world. EC remains the leading cause of cancer death in these areas. Because of lacking highly specific and sensitive biomarkers for early diagnosis and high-risk subject screening, more than 80% of the EC patients are diagnosed at the advanced stage, whose prognosis is very poor, with only 10% 5-year survival rate. The differentiation and lymph nodal metastasis are considered as the main reason to affect the prognosis of EC, and the infiltration, invasion ability and metastasis are the major cause related with EC recurrence and death. However, it has been well recognized that there is discordance...
