Objective To study the expression and clinical significance of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-la) and apoptosis inhibited factor (Survivin) in human mucosa of gastric carcinoma, and to provide the experiment evidence for their effects on tumor angiogenesis. Methods The human mucosa of 78 patients with gastric carcinoma and 30 healthy persons were followed up between 2008 and 2009 at Second Affiliated Hospital, Shanxi Medical University. The expression of VEGF, HIF-la and Survivin were examined by SABC immunohistochemistry in the tissue specimens embedded by paraffin. The relationship of VEGF, HIF-la and Survivin with clinicopathologic factors was analysed by SPSS 10.0 for Windows software. Results VEGF, HIF-la and Survivin were overexpressed in human mucosa of gastric carcinoma, and the level of the positive expression of VEGF, HIF-1αand survivin was 64.10% (50/78),75.64%(59/78) and 52.56%(41/78), respectively. The expression of VEGF, HIF-la and Survivin were significantly higher in gastric carcinoma than that in the health (P<0.05). The relevance were present between the expression of VEGF, HIF-la and Survivin (P<0.05). There were no relevance between the expression of VEGF, HIF-1α, Survivin and gender, invasive location and age (P>0.05), but the expression of VEGF and HIF-la was relevant to the pathology-grade and Clinical stage (P<0.05). And the expression of Survivin was relevant to the Clinical stage (P<0.05), but there were no relevance between the expression of Survivin and pathology-grade (P>0.05).Conclusions Overexpression and relevance of VEGF, HIF-la and Surviving were present in patients with gastric carcinoma. The expression of VEGF, HIF-la and Surviving was relevant to the pathology-grade and Clinical stage. They may serve as the fairly good prognostic factors to indicate biologic behavior and the possibility of new therapy in gastric carcinoma.
