Background and ObjectiveEsophageal carcinoma is one of the common malignancies of digestive system. For many years, surgery has been the mainstay of its treatment. Because of the anatomy of esophagus and its location, esophageal tumor tends to infiltrate the surrounding tissue. The improvement in surgical technique has resulted in apparent decrease of operative mortality, but the survival rates after surgery have not changed. Since, most of esophageal carcinoma patients are diagnosed in later stages with presence of metastasis at diagnosis; this makes the results of surgery, radiotherapy or surgery plus radiotherapy unsatisfactory. The main reasons of failure are recurrence due to remote metastasis and failure to control the spread of the local tumor.
