Objective: To investigate the clinicopathologic importance of heparanase messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and its realationship with prognosis. Methods: Fresh tumors and noncancerous liver tissues were obtained fr-om 15 HCC patients after hepatectomy. Expression levels of heparanase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase mRNA were quantitatively analyzed by real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction. Results: The relative heparanase mRNA expression level (heparanase: glyc-eraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase ratio) in HCC was lower than in noncancerous tissue (P=0.0277<0.05).Conclusions: Reduced hep mRNA expression might result in abnormal cell growth and correlate with HCC progression.
