Objective: To investigate the prevalence of tinnitus and related factors in the population in Jiangsu province.Methods: 6854 persons aged 10 years and over were selected, as a part of a broad study of hearing impairment and ear disease, by the methods of probability proportional to size (PPS). 6333 persons accepted the investigation. The response rate was 92.4%. The participants comprised 47.9% males and 52.1% females, aged from 10 to 93 years old. All participants had a questionnaire answered about tinnitus, pure tone audiometry test and ear examination.Results: The overall prevalence of tinnitus was 14.5% (the standardized rate: 11.4% in the whole country, 12.4% in Jiangsu province). Its prevalence increased with age and there was significant difference among groups (P—0.000). There was no significant difference observed between male (14.1%) and female(14.9%) (P=0.868). But significant difference of prevalence was found between urban (11.9%) and rural residents (15.6%)(P=0.000). The prevalence of significant tinnitus was 1.0%.
