Pulmonary tuberculosis is one of the most harmful respiratory diseases in the army and the epidemic situation of pulmonary tuberculosis is deteriorating. The servicemen especially the new students and soldiers aged from 17 to 24 are the special community. Among which respiratory infectious disease transmit easily due to mass lived conditions. The objectives of the study were to determine the susceptibility to tuberculosis among the freshmen and the students in a military unit, to identify high-risk groups and to provide some information for tuberculosis prevention and control measuresTuberculin test (PPD) was performed in 8123 subjects from 1999 to 2002, the positive rate distribution was calculated and the factors associated with various positive rates were analyzed. In 5612 undergraduate students ,people with the strong positive, positive and negative result were 193(3.43%), 2666(47.51%), 2753(49.05%). In the 2511 freshmen of soldiers, people with the strong positive, positive and negative result were 78(3.11%), 1021(40.66%), 1412(56.23%). The infection rate of tuberculosis in students and soldiers were 27.87%and23.64%, the infection rate of tuberculosis was different in the enrollment of rural and urban .The comparison disclosed a significant difference of positive rate among years and different origin in the study subjects. The high-risk people were identified. It is suggested to take furthermeasures to prevent tuberculosis development. To study the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis in the army, a follow-up study was performed on the undergraduate students in one military unit.
