In order to discover biological active compounds from the rich Chinese plant sources and make full use of them, the chemical constituents in the dry rhizome of Cibotium baromatz (L.) J.Sm were systematically separated and studied.Fourteen compounds were obtained from EtOAc and n-BuOH fraction from the 70% ethanolic extracts of the dried rhizome of C. baromatz by chromatographic techniques (Silica gel CC, Preparative TLC) and classical separation methods. Their structures were determined as 24-methylenecycloartanol (C1), (24R)-stigmast-4-ene-3-one (C2), β-sitosterol (C3), (3R)-des-O-methyl- lasiodiplodin (C4), protocatechuic aldehyde (C5), onitin (C6), alternariol (C7), daucosterol (C8), cibotibaromeside (C9), onitin-2'-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (C10), n-butyl-β-D-fructopyranoside (C11), glucose (C12) , sucrose (C13) and maltose (C14) by spectroscopic methods (IR, UV, MS, 1D NMR and 2D-NMR) and chemistry methods. Cibotibaromeside (C9) was a new compound, and C1, C2, C4, C7 and C14 were isolated from the genus Cibotium Kaulf. for the first time. The work is significant to the discovery of bioactive substances and the establishment of C. barometz quality control.
