Objective: To assess expression levels of heparanase and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in human bladder transitional cell carcinoma (BTCC) and their relation with tumor angiogenesis. Methods: A total of 69 bladder transitional cell carcinoma and 9 normal bladde paraffin-embedded tissue specimens were studied by immunohistochemistry streptavidin-biotin peroxidase(SP) method to evaluate the expression of Heparanase , bFGF and CD34.Results: Expression of heparanase and bFGF was detected in 42.03%(29/69) and 44.93%(31/69) BTCCs respectively, while none expression in normal bladder epithelium. Co-expression of Heparanase and bFGF was dectected in 22 cases with a positive rate of 31.89%.The expression of heparanase in muscular invasive bladder cancer was significantly higher than in superficial cases(63.3% versus 25.64%, P<0.01). There was direct association of heparanase expression with tumor pathological grade(G1: 12.5%; G2: 43.33%; G3: 86.67%). It was...
