OBJECTIVE: To explore the anti-fibrotic effects and possible mechanism of panax notoginseng saponins (PNS), astragalus, baicalin and danshensu on experimental rats.METHODS:Seventy male SD rats were randomly divided into seven study groups (the normal group, the model group, five drugs-treated groups). The latter six groups were induced into hepatic fibrosis with carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) and ethanol. Five drugs were given by abdominal cavity injection every day. At the end of the eighth week, rats were killed and their serum and liver tissues were taken. Alanine amino transferase (ALT) and aspartate amino transferase (AST) were measured. Radioimmunological examination was used to detect the serum levels of hyaluronic acid (HA) and type IV collagen (IV-C). Degrees of liver fibrosis were detected by histopathology under optical microscopy and electron microscopy. Malondialdehyde (MDA), Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and hydroxyproline (Hyp) in hepatic tissue were measured by chromatometry. Immunhistochemical techniques were used to detect the expressions of...
