In this paper, the protective effects of bamboo leaves extracts (BLE) on cerebral ischemia were investigated; furthermore, the protection of BLE against ischemic damage in PC12 cells was examined. The studies demonstrated that BLE had a significant protective effect on cerebral ischemia. The gasping time of isolated head of mice and the survival time of mice subjected to bilateral carotid artery ligation were obviously prolonged by BLE; it was shown that the neurological deficits and infarct size (volumn) in cerebral ischemia rats were decreased markedly by BLE; the brain index and brain water content of the incomplete cerebral ischemia rats were also obviously alleviated; In addition, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was improved and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents was decreased significantly by BLE.BLE had significant antithrombotic effects. It was shown that the death rate of mice induced by the mixture of collagen and adrenalin was decreased remarkably and the arterial thrombosis in rabbits was obviously inhibited by BLE; in addition, BLE shortened the euglobulin lysis time (ELT) in rabbits was lightened the weight of blood clot in mice remarkedly; in vitro tests, the thrombin time (TT), prothrombin time (PT), activation partial prothrombin time (APTT), plasma recalcificatic time (RT) of the rabbit blood plasma was prolonged by BLE; BLE could prolong bleeding time in mice obviously. In addition, BLE could protect PC12 cells damage induced by variable stimultants. BLE remarkably inhibited the decrease of cell viability and attenuated the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) induced by H2O2, Na2S2O4, SNP and Glu; BLE improved the activity of SOD and decreased the content of MDA in PC12 cells after treated with H2O2 and SNP; Furthermore, BLE attenuated the production of NO induced by SNP and Glu.In conclusion, the present study indicated that BLE showed anti-cerebral ischemia effects. The mechanisms may be related to neurons protection.
