Bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) is a popular vegetable crop, and also a traditional medicinal ingredient, because of its high nutritive value and officinal value. The root, stem, flower, fruit and seed of bitter melon were all used as medicine in history. In recent years, several components with great potential medicinal have been isolated from the bitter melon, for example a-momorcharin inactivating ribosome, MAP30 which suppresses HIV activity, and momordicoside A and B, which inhibit tumor growth. At the same time, the cDNA of these components, such as a-momorcharin, MAP30 and a-eleostearic acid have been cloned.The studies in this paper concerned two basic issues of saponin in bitter melon.
